THE LADY
Stone and bronze sculpture, unique piece, titled La Dama (an abstract vision of the Lady of Elche), exhibited in 1988 in the retrospective exhibition ANZO: Yesterday and Today of an Artistic Career (1945–1987) at the Municipal Historical Museum, Valencia.
Size: 67 cm x 46 cm
Provenance: Private collection.
José Iranzo Almonacid, also known as ANZO (Utiel, February 1, 1931 – Valencia, March 4, 2006), was a Spanish painter, designer, and sculptor. He was one of the leading international exponents of Pop Art, widely regarded as the introducer and foremost representative of this movement in Spain.
His artistic career can be divided into four clearly defined stages: Figurative Art, Abstract Art and Informalism (1950–1964), Pop Art (1964–1967), Isolations (1967–1985), and Lyrical Geometry (1985–1993).
He is considered one of the most prominent Spanish artists of the 20th century, especially recognized and acclaimed by critics during his Pop Art (1964–1967) and Isolations (1967–1985) periods. The work of this Valencian artist is preserved, restored, and studied at the Fundación Anzo in Valencia.
Academically trained, Anzo developed his own style within 20th-century European avant-garde art through his Isolationsseries, combining sociological concerns with technological innovation. Created according to precise technical parameters and a carefully selected material palette imbued with strong symbolism, his works emphasize conceptual content, enhanced by techniques and elements reflecting what they represent.
